Desire Typeface

TYPE DESIGN, RESEARCH In Dutch photographer Jan Dirk van der Burg’s observations, a desire path “serves only one purpose: to find the shortest route from A to B.” 1

‘Desire’ is a study on the mundane existence of the desire path as an embodiment of life & culture, it’s relationship as a thing with us as persons and identify the design impacts of this phenomena. The research is concluded with an experimental display serif inspired by the erosions in the ground, formed by our habits and routines.

Bearing characteristics similar to the well-trodden shortcuts, the letterforms consist of highly-contrasted strokes, from thick, sweeping paths to faint, elusive lines. This results in a dramatic interference to the legibility of words. The illegibility of the typeface seeks to question—how much of mark-making can we make before our message lose its way? 🌎
